This is the exit for U.S. 522, in the middle of nowhere, 15 miles east of Breezewood. It's October 3rd in these mountains. The trees are beginning to change color.

For 73 years, the turnpike has been the main east-west route across the Alleghenies from the mid-Atlantic seaboard. But it didn't used to be. Before this turnpike, the way west followed the rivers through the mountains further north. I'm going to have a look at them.
