Potomac River looking north. C&O canal at right

We're about 700 feet off the ground here and the view is spectacular! The vario shows us doing 45 mph @1,269 feet above mean sea level.

The railroad to the left of the river is the original Baltimore & Ohio(now CSX) main line to Pittsburgh and the west. We are flying today along the main line of westward expansion from the middle colonies.

The track on the right is the old Western Maryland Railway, an unsuccessful attempt to compete with the B&O between Baltimore and Pittsburgh. It got all the 2nd-best rights of way. But these are now mostly bicycle trails. There are now bike trails all the way from Washington to Pittsburgh.
