I grew up spending summers on an island in the Thousand Islands of the St. Lawrence River. Here I am at 13 working on one of the outboards.

We had such freedom! I remember at that age going off in that boat to explore the islands. I’d passed the family swimming test and shown that I could change the shear pin on the propeller if I hit a rock. Expect me back for dinner. Off I went exploring, chart in hand.
