Diorama of the Canal Basin
Canal Basin Park has a visitor center and this lovely diorama of the old terminus. This view looks northwest. Note:
- The Juniata River: the water at the far left.
- The canal basin: the watery bits extending to the lower right past warehouses.
- The twin tracks of the APRR: These extend past the warehouses. To the west, they cross the Juniata and head for the first inclined plane, which is miles away.
- The marine railway in the left center of the picture: After a few years, they invented canal boats that could be separated into four sections. Each section was then small enough to fit on a rail car. This avoided the previous cost of trans-shipping goods from boat to warehouse to rail car. To make this work, they built this marine railway where the tracks went into the water.
