Above Williamsburg, Heading West

It's 6:30 on a fine summer morning, and Jay and I start out two ridges east of the Allegheny Front, which you see on the very farthest horizon here.

We're headed west through this gap to the start of the APRR in Hollidaysburg.

The airport and the Blue Lantern are in Williamsburg, on this side of the gap. Williamsburg was an overnight stop on the canal, about a day east of Hollidaysburg. From Williamsburg, the canal went west through this gap, following the Juniata River. The canal was on the south side, left in this picture.

In 1872, the canal was abandoned and its towpath converted into a branch railroad line. Conrail abandoned the line in 1982.

It's now a Rails-to-Trails hiking trail. The Juniata flows as it always has, unmindful of these changes.
