On Friday, September 27, 2024, Hurrican Helene stalled over the mountains in western North Carolina. This caused massive flooding that washed out bridges and swept away homes. Whole parts of the state were cut off.
Operation Airdrop organizes private pilots to ferry relief supplies into airports that have been cut off from road access. It's an amazingly lean operation, with no paid staff and no office but lots of experienced volunteers. They sprang into action and had their first flights flying on the Monday.
I heard about them that Monday from a member of my flying club. Wanting an adventure and to make myself useful, I rescheduled some appointments, booked a hotel, and drove down there that very day. This is the story.
